Amiral Gestion commits to the climate and biodiversity by supporting Jean-Louis Etienne's Polar Pod project

Paris, 29th April 2021 – The asset management company makes a commitment to Jean-Louis Etienne by joining the support committee for his Polar Pod science programme.

The Polar Pod project: exploring the Southern Ocean, a major player in climate equilibrium

This new science project, launched by French explorer Jean-Louis Etienne in March 2021, will kick off in 2023. This expedition in the heart of the "furious fifties*" will enable researchers to collect valuable scientific data by measuring the performance of our planet's biggest oceanic carbon sink.

The Polar Pod is a zero-emission ecological vessel designed specially to sail in extreme conditions, and will follow the Southern Ocean's Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The vessel and its crew of 8 will leave from Port Elizabeth in South Africa and sale in these waters for three years.

The CNRS scientific research centre is coordinating this research project in partnership with the CNES space research centre and the Ifremer marine exploration institute, and the project has scientists from 43 institutions and universities in 12 different countries involved in it. The data and observations made will be accessible by the entire international scientific community. This will be France's contribution to UNESCO's Ocean Decade programme.

Amiral Gestion engaged alongside Polar Pod for the next 5 years

Amiral Gestion's engagement in Responsible Investment began back in 2012 and is based on the aspiration of its teams to take meaningful action as the world's economies undergo a profound transformation, largely as a result of the effects of climate change.

Véronique Le Heup, Co-Head of Responsible Investment and CSR at Amiral Gestion, says:

"Amiral Gestion's support for the Polar Pod project forms part of our corporate commitment to social responsibility and to the climate, which we as investors uphold as an element of our shareholder engagement."

Amiral Gestion pays particularly close attention to the issue of global warming due to the scale of its impact on the economy, on our ecosystem and on society in general. There is a need for mankind to acquire a better understanding of weather events and make impact measurements more precise, so we believe that the scientific ambitions of the Polar Pod project are fundamentally in the interests of the common good.
